NY 55 - Poughquag
   Poor           Great

The trail crossing of NY Route 55 is 5.3 miles west of the intersection with Route 22 south of Pawling and 0.1 miles west of the intersection with Route 292. It is 1.5 miles southeast of the intersection of NY 55 and NY 216. There is no parking at the trail crossing, I have picked people up here but I don't recommend it. A small parking lot is about 0.1 miles further west. (See mile 7.2 of Section 3). The marker on the attached map shows the location of the trail crossing.GPS: N41.58835 W73.65775 The west street view from this point shows the southbound trail while the north view shows the northbound trail. To reach the crossing most directly from the parking lot most directly walk east along the shoulder of the highway. The southbound AT (to Section 4) goes right (south). The northbound AT (to Section 3) goes left (north).12/20/06 Updated 08/04/18 Blue blazed trail in rear of lot leads directly to AT. Left is North towards Nuclear Lake and right is South under power lines toward Route 55.12/1/20 0

Old NY Route 55
   Poor           Great

The intersection of Route 55 and Route 292 is 5.2 miles west of the intersection of the former with Route 22 south of Pawling. It is also 0.1 miles east of the AT crossing of Route 55. Follow Route 292 south. It soon bears west, then makes a left turn and goes south. At this point continue straight ahead on Old Route 55. The trail crossing is a short distance further. Total distance from Route 55 is 0.4 miles. There is roadside parking for 2-3 cars on the north side of the road at the trail crossing. There might be other roadside parking possible in the vicinity. Railroad tracks directly down from road going South. Parking is good for day use, but would probably use other lots in area for longer. 8/1/19 2-3

Depot Hill Road
   Poor           Great

Depot Hill Hill Road goes east from NY 216 about 4.3 miles north of 'downtown' Stormville or about 1.5 miles south of the intersection of NY 216 with NY 55. Follow paved Depot Hill Road ior 2.0 miles. At that point there is a sign that the road further on is not maintained. The parking area is immediately to the left. There is a communication tower to the right. The green arrow on the attached map indicates the location of the parking area. To reach the AT, walk along Depot Hill Road past the 'End of Maintained Road' sign. The road is blue-blazed. There are still some remnants of paving at the beginning, but the road is deeply rutted. It then becomes a narrow dirt road . The At crosses the road about 0.1 miles from the parking area. The marker on the attached map indicates the approximate location of the trail crossing. There is no parking available there. However parking is available about 0.1 miles away. See next listing.5/12/20 4-6

Blue Triangle Trail
   Poor           Great

Follow Route 216 2.2 miles north from 'downtown' Stormville or 3.7 miles south from the intersection of NY 216 and NY 55. Go east on Green Haven Road (County Road 8). Pass the grim Green Haven prison. In 1.3 miles Green Haven Road makes a sharp right turn. In another 0.5 miles go left on Indian Pass Road. Follow this 0.6 miles to a turn around near the end of the road. This turnaround probably used to be the end but it appears the road now continues a bit further. However this extension may be a private driveway. Parking is available in the turnaround. The trail begins on the left side. The green arrow on the attached map indicates the approximate location of the trailhead. I did not have GPS coordinates. There is no mention of the trail in the current NY/NJ AT Guide, even though it is maintained as an AT side trail. It is shown on the AT map, although as a yellow-blazed trail. The blazes are actually blue triangles. The mile marker of 3.8 is only approximate. This trail probably provides the most direct access to the view ledges of Mt. Egbert. The trail blazed with blue triangles leaves Indian Pass Road and climbs to the AT. There is a sign at the Indian Pass trail head indicating the is an 'Appalachian Trail Extension'. There was no sign at the AT end when I last hiked through there. I have not yet hiked this side trail, but it appears well blazed and well maintained. From the map it appears to be about 0.5 miles long. 08/10/09 4-5

Grape Hollow Road
   Poor           Great

This point is at the intersection of Stormville Mountain Road and Grape Hollow Road. I-84 is only a few feet away. To reach this point from I-84 take Exit 16 onto the northbound Taconic State Parkway. Go about 1.5 miles to the exit for NY Route 52. Go east on Route 52 for 4.3 miles then go left on Stormville Mountain Road. This intersection is just before Route 52 starts to climb a hill. Stormville Mt. Road climbs rather steeply for 1.5 miles to the intersection with Grape Hollow Road which goes straight ahead. Stormville Mt. Road goes right and crosses an overpass over I-84. Note: The AT Guide to NY/NJ refers to Stormville Mt. Road as Mountain Top Road but I saw no signs with that latter designation. There is no parking right at the intersection, but there are parking pull-offs for several cars about 0.1-0.2 miles to the east on Grape Hollow Road and 0.1-0.2 miles to the west on Stormville Mt. Road. There is also roadside parking for a couple of cars on the other side of the overpass. The northbound AT goes north into the woods. The southbound AT crosses I-84 on the overpass, then at the next intersection goes right on Old Stormville Mt. Road. It is at this intersection that Mountain Top Road officially begins, continuing straight ahead. 12/1/20 Roadside parking nearby. See directions.

Old Stormville Mt. Road
   Poor           Great

See directions to the intersection of Grape Hollow Road and Stormville Mt. Road (Mile 5.8). Go right on Stormville Mt. Road, crossing over I-84. Go right at the next intersection onto Old Stormville Mt. Road. Follow this to the turnaround at its its end. There are places for 1-2 cars to park, more if you park in the turnaround. Care should probably be taken to allow people to turn around. The green arrow on the attached map indicates the approximate location of the turnaround. Walk back down the road a short distance to reach the AT. Southbound goes right and starts to climb a hill. The northbound goes straight ahead down Old Stormville Mt. Road. 5/12/20 See Directions

Spur Trail to NY 52 Parking
   Poor           Great

From I-84 take Exit 16 onto the northbound Taconic State Parkway. Go about 1.5 miles to the exit for NY Route 52. Go east on Route 52 for 4.2 miles. There is a small parking lot on the left at the end of a short driveway. There are signs with the AT and hiker logos just before the parking area. This is about a half mile after NY 52 goes under I-84. There is also a yellow caution sign indicating a road coming in from the left. There is a smaller sign saying "Driveway" under it. See Parking Safety comments for more details.
If coming from the other direction on NY 52, the entrance to the lot is 0.4 miles beyond the intersection of Leetown Road and NY 52.
The marker on the attached map indicates the entrance to the parking area. GPS: N41.5412 W73.73285 The driveway is visible in the street view to the east from this point. From the lot a blue-blazed trail follows a old road north from the parking lot about 250 feet to meet the AT. Northbound towards I-4 is straight ahead Southbound is to the right. it is about 0.1 miles to the crossing of NY 52 and the southern end of Section 4. 08/05/18 3-4

NY 52 - Stormville
   Poor           Great

From I-84 take Exit 16 onto the northbound Taconic State Parkway. Go about 1.5 miles to the exit for NY Route 52. Go east on Route 52 for 4.3 miles to the point where the AT crosses NY 52. This is about a half mile after NY 52 goes under I-84. There is no parking here, but there is a small parking lot a short distance to the north at the end of a short driveway. (See Mile 7.1.)
If coming from the other direction on NY 52, the crossing is about 0.4 miles beyond the intersection of Leetown Road and NY 52.
This crossing is the official southern terminus of Section 4 and northern terminus of Section 5. To reach this point from the parking area go left along the highway shoulder from the emtramce. In a short distance the southbound AT (from Sec. 4) comes out of the woods from the left, crosses the highway and starts to climb a hill (to Sec. 5). Alternatively one could use the spur from the parking lot and turn right (southbound) on the AT. The marker on the attached map indicates the trail crossing. GPS:N41.5403 W73.7332 The street view to the east from this point shows the northbound trail. The street view to the west shows the southbound trail. 06/18/07 Updated 12/1/20 0 here. Use AT lot.
